The complete ballroom competition packing list: attire, shoes, jewelry, hair and makeup, emergency kit, food, documents and recovery, plus a night-before routine.

The complete competition checklist every ballroom dancer should have before leaving home.
No dancer ever plans to forget something important. Yet almost everyone has experienced it: a missing shoe brush, jewelry left on the dresser, safety pins nowhere to be found, or the sinking realization at the venue that the heel protectors are still sitting at home.
Competition day already brings enough excitement on its own. The last thing you need is stress that could have been avoided by packing the night before.
After years of competing, coaching and preparing dancers for competition, one thing has become clear: the best performances begin long before anyone steps onto the floor. A well-packed competition bag will not improve your technique. What it will do is keep you organized, calm and fully focused when your heat is called.
Below is our complete ballroom competition packing list, built from real competition experience. Whether it is your first event or your fiftieth, a reliable packing routine makes competition day smoother, less stressful and far more enjoyable.
Bring shoes you have already broken in. New shoes on competition day are one of the most common causes of blisters and slips. For what to wear in training, see What to Wear to Ballroom Practice.
For step-by-step application, see our Dance Competition Makeup Guide and What It Really Takes to Create the Ballroom Look.
The emergency kit is the section people skip, and the one they most often wish they had. A loose stone, a broken strap or a torn hem can all be fixed in five minutes if the kit is in your bag.
Competition days are long and venue food is unpredictable. Small, easy snacks between heats keep your energy steady without making you feel heavy on the floor.
Arrive early enough to find the dressing area, check in, and warm up without rushing. Do hair and makeup with plenty of time before your first heat, and keep your emergency kit and water within reach all day. Between rounds, stay warm, keep moving lightly, and eat small amounts.
Most importantly, trust the preparation you did in training. The packing list takes care of the small things so you can focus on the big one: dancing well.
