Most couples need four to six private lessons for a confident first dance. Here is how experience, song choice and timeline change that number.

The most common question wedding couples ask us before they book is simple: how many dance lessons do we actually need? The honest answer depends on three things: how much dance experience you have, how ambitious you want the first dance to be, and how much time is left before the wedding. This guide gives you realistic numbers for each situation and a timeline that works.
Most couples with no dance experience need four to six private lessons for a simple, confident first dance. A more choreographed routine with lifts, dips or a mix of styles usually takes eight to twelve lessons. Couples who already dance socially can often get there in two to four.
If neither of you has danced before, the first lesson or two go to fundamentals: how to hold each other, how to walk together in time, and how the lead and follow actually work. That foundation is what makes the rest of the routine feel natural instead of memorized. Couples with some social dance background skip most of this.
The song decides the dance style. A song in three usually becomes a waltz. A slow song in four is often a foxtrot or rumba. Faster songs work as swing. Some styles are quicker to learn than others, and a long song means more choreography to learn. Many couples ask us to edit the song down to two or two and a half minutes, which saves lessons without losing the moment.
Couples who practice ten to fifteen minutes a few times a week between lessons move much faster than couples who only dance in the studio. We will give you a video of the routine after each lesson so you can practice at home.
We recommend starting two to three months before the wedding. That gives you room to take a lesson every week or two, practice between sessions, and still have a buffer for work trips, illness and the busy final weeks. Starting early also lets you do a final lesson or two in the shoes and, if possible, the dress you will wear on the day.
If your wedding is closer than that, it is still possible. We have prepared couples in three to four weeks with two lessons a week. It is more intense, but a simple, beautiful first dance is realistic.
Couples who want more choreography add lessons between steps 3 and 5.
For a first dance, private lessons are the better choice. The routine is built to your song, your venue and your comfort level, and the lesson time goes entirely to the two of you. Group classes are a good complement if you also want to feel more comfortable dancing with guests later in the night. Our beginner Latin group classes cover Rumba and Cha Cha.
Cost depends on the number of lessons you take. We cover typical prices and what affects them in How Much Do Wedding Dance Lessons Cost?
The fastest way to know how many lessons you need is to take the first one. Our 45-minute Wedding Dance Intro Lesson is $59. Jelena Stojkovic will hear your song, see where you are starting from, and give you a clear plan with a realistic number of lessons for your date. See our wedding dance lessons or book the intro lesson online.
