Private vs Group Dance Lessons: Which Should You Choose?

Private lessons or group classes? What happens in each, what they cost, and how to decide which format fits your goals, budget and schedule.

Private vs Group Dance Lessons: Which Should You Choose?

If you want to learn to dance, the first decision is usually the format: private lessons with an instructor, or group classes with other students. Both work. They suit different goals, budgets and personalities. This guide explains what happens in each, what they cost, and how to decide.

How group classes work

In a group class, one instructor teaches a small group the same material at the same time. Students usually rotate partners, which is one of the best ways to learn to lead and follow, because every partner feels slightly different. Classes follow a set curriculum and level.

Group classes are a good fit if you

  • Want to try dancing without a big commitment
  • Enjoy a social atmosphere and meeting new people
  • Do not have a partner and want to dance with several
  • Are working with a tighter budget

At AscenDance Studio, our beginner Latin group classes teach Rumba and Cha Cha at 18484 Preston Rd in Dallas. One class is $25, or $30 for both. No partner or experience is needed.

How private lessons work

In a private lesson, the instructor works only with you, or with you and your partner. The lesson is built around your goals, and the pace adjusts to how quickly you pick things up. Mistakes get corrected immediately, before they become habits.

Private lessons are a good fit if you

  • Have a deadline, like a wedding, gala or competition
  • Want to learn a specific style that is not offered as a group class
  • Feel self-conscious learning in front of others
  • Want faster, more detailed progress

Our private dance lessons are taught by Jelena Stojkovic, a World Cup Champion and 14-time National Champion, at our Addison studio. Most students start with a $59 introductory coaching session.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Cost per session: group classes cost less. Private lessons cost more but cover more material per minute.
  • Speed of progress: private lessons are faster because every correction is for you.
  • Flexibility: group classes run on a fixed schedule. Private lessons are booked around your calendar.
  • Styles: group classes cover a set program. Private lessons can cover any style we teach, from Salsa to Waltz.
  • Social life: group classes win. You meet people who are learning at the same stage.

The best approach for most beginners

Many students combine both. A private lesson every week or two builds technique quickly, and a group class gives you practice dancing with different partners at a lower cost. If you are not sure where to start, a single group class is an easy first step, and one introductory private session will tell you how quickly you can progress with individual coaching.

When private lessons are the clear choice

If you are preparing a wedding first dance, choose private lessons. The routine is built to your song, your venue and your comfort level. The same is true for competition preparation, where every detail of a routine matters; see our DanceSport coaching.
